this post is long overdue. two weekends ago Ashley invited me along with some international students from her class to go hiking at Multnomah Falls. we ended up taking a real long trail that took us about four hours to complete. i slipped and fell on my butt TWICE because I was wearing the wrong shoes. As always.

ashley and i planned to go for a hike somewhere along mt. hood last friday.
we got side-tracked by the outlet malls and our rumbling stomachs.
we eventually made it toward the forests but stopped for coffee at a small cafe when it began to rain.
the man who owned the very small business served the best coffee i've had in my life,
and also steered us in the direction of a nearby hiking trail.
the hike never happened because we came unprepared for the cold weather. it was also getting late.

after complaining endlessly to myself over first day troubles, i've come to adapt to my small living space.

the first night here i attended a house meeting, where i met my new friend and across-the-hall neighbor, ashley. she's from alaska, degree in spanish. she is the nicest, most considerate person i've met so far. a few of her relatives drove down from washington the other day to take us to ikea. i am so grateful to know her and am forever in her debt.

it is extremely humid here, which was unexpected. if you stand beneath the shadows of trees you might get a cool breeze. my window faces the sun and so my room is forever a sauna. it's dreadful. i never want to head outdoors because the heat tires me and the sunlight is too strong. like i'm back in california. it's supposed to cool down starting next week.

i took the bus monday and i imagined myself traveling through the streets of københavn. but i felt nothing.

the building is over a hundred years old. the floors creak. my closet door doesn't close. my window doesn't stay open unless i prop it up with a book or a can of corn. since i have to keep my window open at all times, i occasionally get a huge fly swarming around my room until i lead it back out the window by flapping my arms all over the room like a lunatic. the third floor, where i am, smells of sewage every morning. then it transfers into some sort of gym locker room stink. my room smells as if the previous owner had dumped soy sauce all over the carpets. but i still crave asian food. mmm...

someone give me ideas of what to do until school begins... there is a saturday farmers market in the morning. that is all i've got planned.
